From Cramped to Chef-Worthy: The Lakewood Kitchen Transformation

When these clients came to me, their kitchen was dark, cramped, and simply not working for their busy family of five. It was time for a total transformation - not just in looks, but in function.

They had a layout in mind that was a decent starting point… but I knew we could do better. I reworked their plans to create a completely new design that made better use of the space and delivered features they hadn’t even considered.

We opened up the wall between the kitchen and dining area, immediately flooding the space with light and opportunity. Then came the fun part: a massive island that seats the whole family, double ovens, a built-in microwave, a pot filler, and plenty of smart, streamlined storage. We even reused a few existing appliances—because great design doesn’t always mean starting from scratch.

The statement quartzite counters bring just the right amount of drama, and the glossy tile backsplash adds a pop of playful personality without overwhelming the space.

This kitchen is now the true heart of the home. And the best part? The clients are still in love with it nearly a year later. We’re currently working on updating the living room to match the fresh, functional vibe—so stay tuned for that reveal coming soon!

If your kitchen (or any space) is craving a fresh start, let’s make it happen.

Brittany Tharp

Hi, I’m Brittany — a residential interior designer based just outside Richmond, Virginia, where I live with my husband, two daughters, and our wild little dog. I started my career as a teacher, but after taking time off to stay home with my kids, I realized I was ready for a new chapter — one that blended creativity, problem solving, and helping people feel good in their homes. Now, I use my design degree (and teaching instincts) to guide homeowners through the design process so they can make confident choices and create spaces that truly support their lives.
